Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin has been announced as the keynote speaker at the legendary Texas conglomerate festival SXSW, something guaranteed to give ethereum and cryptocurrency a huge exposure boost.
Lubin, who was earlier this month revealed by Forbes to be investing heavily in a former competitor, founded blockchain platform ethereum along with Vitalik Buterin, and has since become one of the most recognizable and trusted voices in the world of cryptocurrency and blockchain.
After leaving ethereum, a blockchain-based platform for smart contracts and applications, Lubin founded ConsenSys in 2015, helping startups build on top of the ethereum network.
“From the future of human space travel on the footsteps of the moon landing’s 50th Anniversary to a new digital frontier lead by blockchain, today SXSW announces keynote Joseph Lubin and more featured speakers who are exploring what’s next across the worlds of technology, film, culture, music, and beyond,” SXSW organisers wrote, announcing Lubin’s keynote.
SXSW has fast become one of the most watched festivals in the world and every year brings a raft of big names from the world of technology, culture, and politics to Austin, Texas, to discuss what’s going to be at the top of the world’s agenda in the year to come. Next year the festival will run from March 8 through to March 17.
“Lubin is one of the foremost visionaries shaping the rapidly-developing blockchain industry, and as such we’re excited to have him as the first-ever Keynote complementing the Blockchain & Cryptocurrency Track in the second half of SXSWeek,” said Hugh Forrest, SXSW chief programming officer. “The speakers announced today run the gamut of conference content, exemplifying our standing as the foremost destination for creative people to gain the skills, knowledge, and inspiration to achieve their goals.”
Previous SXSW keynotes have been made by SpaceX snd Tesla CEO Elon Musk, philanthropist Melinda Gates, and NSA leaker Edward Snowden.
Earlier this year Lubin played down the significance of ethereum’s recent price falls, telling Bloomberg TV that the 80% ethereum price sell-off so far this year will ultimately make the bitcoin, cryptocurrency and blockchain industries stronger.
“We’ve seen six big bubbles, each more epic than the previous one, and each bubble is astonishing when they’re happening but when you look back they look like pimples on a chart,” Lubin said. “With each of these bubbles we have a tremendous surge of activity and that’s what we’re seeing right now.”
The price of ether, the tradable token of the ethereum network, powered to over $1,000 in February 2018, thanks to the hundred of blockchain-based projects that were built on ethereum’s blockchain last year.
It’s now thought that the ethereum price has been hit as investors cash out of these projects that raised funds through so-called initial coin offerings (ICOs). The ethereum price hit year-to-date lows of $177 in September.
Lubin joins previously-announced SXSW keynotes Scottish singer Shirley Manson, Chvrches frontwoman Lauren Mayberry, Buffy the Vampire Slayer producer Marti Noxon, Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom and TechCrunch editor-at-large Josh Constine.
